noteRiver Fishing

New last year is the Upper Wye Passport, a roving voucher system allowing you to fish for wild trout, salmon and winter grayling in the delightful head waters and tributaries of the Wye.

River and stream fishing is extremely challenging, especially in the smaller tributaries.

Miles of unspoilt 'beats' are now available on some of Britain's prettiest stretches of river thanks to the work of the Wye Usk Foundation and the owners.

Vouchers and maps of where the fishing beats are located are all available from Fforest Fields. All you have to do is bring a current Rod Licence, available at most Post Offices. Rover vouchers cost 3.00 each and most beats require four vouchers for adults (2 for under 14's) e.g. 12.00 per day/beat (or 6.00).

Clear instructions and detailed maps are given in the guide although it's probably wise to bring a good ordinance survey map too. (147 & 148)

Thigh waders are normally sufficient although chest waders could be needed on some beats in some conditions. Studs are a wise precaution when fishing as rocks can be very slippery.

Bag limit is two trout per beat per day (minimum 9 inches) although some beats are catch and release only. Barbless hooks only as these streams contain many salmon and trout parr that seem to take flies however presented!

Fishing Seasons:
Salmon Rules 3rd March - 17th October (25th on some rivers.)
Fly start to end of season
