Swans back on the lake!
George came home the other day with the great news that Penny Bow-wave and her beau have returned to the Long Lake! We have not seen them all summer and thought that perhaps they had found a safer lake to raise young on but we now think that they are just a young pair and probably have not had cygnets yet.
There are two of them and it is not easy to tell them apart, exactly which is Penny or Peter! They look wonderfully well and happy to be back, they have flown from the Long Lake up to the Round Lake but they seem to prefer the size of the first. I think that it is easier for them to land. George is feeding them with bird seed which they seem to love. One scoops it off the surface and the other prefers to dip their head in the water and take it from the bottom. They hiss at the dogs and you if you go to close while they are feeding but it is a joy to see them again.

The difference between the Cob(male and the Pen(female) is the Cob has a larger knob at the base of it's bill also the Cob is a little larger and his neck would be bigger than the Pen. They will mate at the age 3/4 years. For life. And did you know swan's have 25000 feathers. When i was a teanager i made friends with a sick swan i got it help visited it each day he would come out of the Lake and sit next to me on the bank he would let me stroke him i did this for weeks and when he was well and strong he would still come over and see me for a while. They have very good memorys. ifyou are kind to them
