A walk along the Brecon and Monmouth canal

On another lovely day, last Sunday, George took me and the dogs to Crickhowell. He kept it secret where we were going; just saying that it was south and would take about half an hour to get to.

He turned off the main road up a teeny side road that crossed over the Brecon canal. With a look of absolute disbelief his plan fell apart as we saw that the canal path was CLOSED!!  Undaunted by this we followed the little road until we met up with the canal again at Llangattock. Just after the village we found a suitable place to park the car and then set off along the path. It was beautiful!

He brought with him a useful little book on Welsh Canals, the Shropshire Union, Llangollen, Montgomery and the Monmouthshire and Brecon.  I have been fascinated in the track of the Brecon canal since, about two years ago, it collapsed, causing a huge flood at a little place called Gilwern. It seemed to run so high on the hillside.

Anyway, we walked from just to the west of Llangattock to Llangynidr. It really was a lovely, lovely walk. Even in winter and I can imagine it would be even more beautiful in summer. We often recommend that people staying with us take a day trip on the canal from Brecon towards Abergavenny. I know that it is something that we plan to do on a quiet couple of days next spring.

We ended our walk (as we often do!!) in a pub on the canal-side. The Coach and Horses at Llangynidr. We had a very warm welcome, the food (roast beef) was delicious and the roaring log fire made for a cozy lunch.  We had chatted with the owner about coming down from Builth for our walk, saying that we often recommended to visitors of our campsite that they had a trip on the canal. After our meal he came up to us to say goodbye and said, thoughtfully, "I know a campsite at Hundred House”, we said that's the one.....he said "well, you showed me round the cottage you have for sale". Isn't that EXTRADORINARY, I had spent the meal thinking he looked familiar and there it was.

Well, it is guaranteed that if you go to the Coach and Horses at Llangynidr and mention that you have stayed at Fforest Fields and read this on here you will get a VERY warm welcome!!

The dogs absolutely loved it too, there was no one else walking and the peace and quiet was wonderful. Meggie swam across at one stage to hunt bunnies on the other bank! They are doing repairs along the whole stretch but these are hoped to be finished by April 2009 when it will be fully open again.

What a nice way to spend your Sunday, can George have a word with Jeff he is not thoughtful with surprises like that, just once would be nice. I have to come up with all the nice ideas. We did go to Brecon and saw where the canal ends once, we saw all the barges moored up. Can I also ask if there any chance of having spell check added to your comments bar for someone like me, spelling is not what it should be at my age but it would save people like me sitting here for ages with a
dictionary checking my words, I hope you can. It is embarrassing to ask, but I wonder how many more people it would help.

Hi Carol,

The commenting system is "under development" and there are plans afoot to integrate a spell checker - eventually. Meanwhile, until we have this feature, why not do as I do, and write your comment on your PC first, spell check it, and then paste it into the comment editor?

OR - use Firefox web browser, the latest versions have in-line spell checking built in!!!

Bear in mind too, that if you add a comment (which you can only do when logged in anyway) you can also edit it later if you notice a spelling mistake... look for the "Edit" link on your comment (it only appears to you when you are logged in) ando you can use that to edit/update any comment you have left, regardless of how long ago you left it...
UPDATE

If you change your web browser to Firefox - available from: http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/ you can add a spell checker to it so you never need to worry about spell checking again...

Firefox is a far superior web browser to Internet Explorer - and it's faster too.

But there are several reasons to use it in preference:-

1) SAFETY - the current versions of Internet Explorer are unsafe and can allow hackers to steal data from your PC/Laptop, please read this article to see just how big a risk you are taking if you stay with Internet Explorer:- http://www.cms-wales.co.uk/our...p-using-ie

2) Firefox has thousands of add-ons available for download, such as a spell checker (more about that in a moment) which allow you to have a web browser that works exactly the way you want it to. One of my Favourites is "FoxMarks" which keeps the Bookmarks on my PC and my Laptop perfectly synchronised - so if I add new bookmark on my PC, it is also there on my laptop next time I open up Firefox on the laptop, no more dashing between machines trying to find the URL of a site that you only have saved on the OTHER machine!!!

Finally - the spell checker for Firefox...

Once you have Firefox installed, you can then get the "SpellBound" spell checker add-on for it here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search?q=spellbound&cat=all

That look fabulous i havent been there before it would be nice for an outing with the kids and dog, we did the canal at Talybont a few years ago , we shall have to make a pont of visiting there too and im sure i could bribe lee with a pint in the pub lol.

I use firefox as my usual browser as i really cant get on with internet explorer any more too many bugs , fed up of having to keep downloading patches for it. Althoug i am using at the moment because my firefox is playing up on the laptop now typical. it probably needs updating to newer version.
