Boxing Day walk

What an absolutely stunning day Friday was!  We took a 'Christmas' picnic of turkey sandwigs, mince pies, brandy butter and soup and went to our favourite beach in Pembrokeshire. It is about a year since we were last there and Jessie thinks about three since she was. George used to camp in the field directly above the beach when he was a little lad (ooh! YEARS ago!) then we took our three down there whenever we could and firstly camped in the field until the NT put a stop to that, then in a campsite near St. Davids. Traeth Llewyn has always been our favourite beach though.  As you can see from the pictures below it was looking stunning. We now have to walk over from Abereiddy ; What this has done is to make the beach a lot less crowded, people think twice before lugging the daily requirements of several small children up the path, over the headland and down the very steep steps to the beach.  We had a wonderful time, the dogs simply loved it, digging holes in the sand and racing about chasing waves.

The air was so clear that we could see for miles. As we drove down there the Preseli hills were standing out, so clearly, I suppose that we normally go down in summer and the heat haze prevents such a clear view. It was wonderul, you felt as if you were breathing the clearest air in Britain!

We all 'washed our face in the oggin' which is something that my father used to insist that we did if we went to the sea during the winter months. It leaves a wonderfully salty taste to your lips! Jessie threatened (or was it promised?!) to swim, but a quick wash convinced her that she might just give that one a miss.

On the way back, George went to Aberiddy to collect the car and Jess and I with the dogs went the opposite way and walked over to Porthgain. That was pretty hairy, there are shear drops into the sea and the dogs seem to take delight in causing us heart attacks as they dash towards them...however, all was fine and we met up in the Sloop car park!

We then called in to see Harry (our famous and wonderful web maestro) who has moved to Pembrokeshire - unfortunately it was dark by the time we got to meet him in the boat club at Newport so we couldn't see the wonder of the sands there, we shall have to go back before too long so we can try another beach!

Jess has now returned to work in Bath saying that it has done her "a world of good" to go back and she feels well able to cope with city life again!

Hi all
I love the sea but the 2 collies haven't seen it yet! I also went for a boxing day walk, but it turned out to be a 3 hour hike! I didn't go to the common as usual, but decided to go over fields and footpaths. We all enjoyed it apart from my joints, who protested strongly for the following 2 days!! Strolling with the dogs they don't mind, Hiking they do!!

Hope George has had the mower out today. I have!! Drier now than all summer!!

Love
Alice and the Collies

And a very happy and peaceful new year to all our visitors past and future! It is blinking cold here at the moment .... we think it would be sensible to have shares in bird food, they are going through it at a rate of knots at the moment! I have, on my feeder on the lawn at the moment, three blackbirds, two spotted woodpeckers and a host of finches, tits and robins!

Hey all,

Weather here a bit cold. -8c in car this morning at 7.30ish.
Lots of slippery bits but managed alright.

Be careful out there.
