Fish and Otters!

There are fish in the round lake!

We have been doubting it since neither scale nor fin have been seen of them since we stocked the lake earlier this year but yesterday one was caught.  A good sized carp apparently; which is, I can tell you, a GREAT relief!

The second exciting event and possibly a reason why we have not seen many fish is that an otter was seen and photographed on the lane at the top of the site. At about 6.30 in the morning, hopping along the road and then jumping through the fence and making off past the lake. As soon as I have a copy of the picture I will put one on here for you to see.

This now poses a problem -  stands for fishing or hides for viewing otters? Your suggestions welcome!!

Hi Katie
Why not have both, i would love to see Otters free in the wild.Only ever seen them in a Zoo.If you have seen one there will be a mate and babys at this time of year up to 4 at a time. They love to eat eel's so you could add them to your Lake this may save the Fish.

Otters

katie,
I can agree with the last comment by Carol and Jeff, but there is a slight problem with adding eels. Eels are a carniverous predator and will eat all the young fish thus this will drastically cut down the population in the lake. If this happens then it will be costing a fortune to constantly stock up on fish. I cannot suggest anything different but keep a check on the stock. The other way is to introduce some food elsewere in the area like freshly dead fish this would leave the stock alone in the lake and then every one would be happy. Or make a run that diverts the otter towards the other lake then that way it can and famliy move away from the stock. Some people may think i am being cruel by stating this but as much as you are into keeping everthing natural, it is still a bussiness and as we all know money is very tight at present and every one needs to count the pennies as much as we can smilies/cry.gifsmilies/cool.gif

Don't worry, we are not going to change a thing! If the otters have found a new source of food, so be it....if we loose a few fish, so be it! I am sure there is plenty for everyone. It's just a joy to know that we have them so close to the site. We knew that we had otters on other parts of the farm but we had no idea they would venture so close to people AND dogs.

Hi Katie,

Long time no write. Been catching up with house decorating. Still on a 4 day week.

Lovely to hear you have fish and otters on the lake. Will definitely try to get to see them.
Might have to leave Tina at home tho. She is working extra to try and keep enough monies coming in.

Be Safe
