Conservation Award of Special Distinction
In 2008, David Bellamy launched a new Award of Special Distinction for parks participating in the Conservation Award Scheme. Parks were nominated by the Scheme’s assessors for these Awards, designed to highlight particularly good ideas or examples of best practice that show the way forward. Only 15 parks a year are chosen and the projects that won show the impressive innovation and environmental commitment of parks in BH&HPA membership.
Our assessor, Julian Jones from the Radnorshire Wildlife Trust http://www.rwtwales.org/ asked for Fforest Fields to be considered and to our complete surprise we have been given the award! Julian mentioned the wildlife rich habitats that we have created, the streams, pools and lakes as being “really quite superb” and reported on the wide range of animals and plants that these areas support. David Bellamy says that our award recognises that our environmental work is truly innovative and something of which we can be proud. It won’t stop there though!
We have to thank you as well for filling out and sending off to Professor Bellamy the post cards.....just sometimes we get to read them and we love the comments that you put, particularly the ones written by children. He does read all of them and we get a letter from him at the end of the year quoting some of the more fun or interesting ones. Although the scheme is ‘paid for’ I really do believe that it is one that you can trust. The assessors are all experts in their fields and taken, normally, from the local wildlife trust. Julian Jones who has been doing ours for the last eleven years has watched our progress from farm field to campsite and knows the site well. He often points our flowers or animals that we had no idea we were harbouring and takes great delight in sending us a full report. The Radnorshire Wildlife Trust runs a program of walks and talks during the summer months and it is always worth looking at their website to see what is going on if you are planning to visit us. They have several nature reserves too which are all worth visiting. Their shop in Llandrindod Wells is full of useful information on the Radnorshire environment.
