Ready for opening!

With less than a month until we open I thought that it was about time that I put pen to paper (as we used to say!) and bring you up to speed with what has been going on at Fforest Farm and Fields!

We have had a busy winter, although I think it seems less frantic than last, when we put in the All Weather Pitches. This year we have tidied up the loo block again, new tiling around the showers, new basin surrounds and shelves and all now freshly painted by Susie, ready for the season.  We have also put in several new all weather pitches allowing friends who are coming to stay for a week or more to be together. They are ‘selling like hot cakes’!!

Our main work has been on the farm this winter, which often seems to be pushed to the side-lines once the season opens. After about fifty years of growing the majority of the softwood trees in the Fforest wood have reached maturity and they need to be felled in stages.  This is combined with our desire to re-plant the hill with hard woods, oak and ash for instance, has led to us drawing up a planned removal of the trees.  To start with though, we have to put logging roads in for the felling company to use.

George and Will, together with the contractor David have been working at those for over a month now and they are nearly all finished.  We are lucky to be able to use our own stone for most of the roads, it means that we have opened a new quarry and hauling with tractors and trailers have moved tons of it to the roadway, where David levels and smoothes with his bulldozer.  I am not certain when we plan to start bringing down the wood in compartments to lessen the impact, probably at the end of this year or early next. We will re-plant straight away. We are sure that in the long term it will make a huge difference to the beauty of the hillside.

Strange as it may seem the winter has been perfect for doing this work, with little rain and often hard frosts there has been minimal impact to the ground, in fact, until you get up to them they are almost un-noticeable

Bookings are going well; because we keep the numbers down at the beginning of the season, we are now nearly full for Easter. Whitsun as ever is proving to be a most popular week and August is filling up nicely!   If you plan to come and visit the Royal Welsh Show please do contact me for a specific form as soon as you can.

 See you soon!

We've managed to find a replacement for our old, broken down car and are now looking forward to meeting you all again. We've already completed your bookingform. As Mr. Nicholls said: " we can't wait" either! We are bringing our family enhancement (Boxer dog) with us this year. Should be alright as he's UK bred.

See you, when we see you!
